Jane does not show up as a backlink, for the same reason that transcluded text didn't show up in a search in Ex:SearchingInTransclusions: the link to ChrisSmith is not actually part of the JaneDoe tiddler, but only appears there when the tiddler is viewed.

This is consequential enough for the topology of links between tiddlers that there's a special name for it: a link is said to be a hard link if it, in the words of the documentation, β€œcan be detected by a superficial examination of wikitext.” Basically, that means the CamelCase tiddler name or the tiddler name in [[double square brackets]] or as the to parameter of a $link widget must be directly present in the text field. Links that appear as a result of a transclusion with {{}} or <<>>, or $link widgets where the to parameter is transcluded with {{}} or <<>>, will instead be soft links – they will show up when you view the tiddler, but TiddlyWiki won't know about them when you use filters or other methods of querying.
